Gastric Bypass Surgery

Wow-Decreased numbers of those with certain forms of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease and an instant cure for obesity...what more could we ask for in a treatment???
Gastric bypass surgery has taken our nation by storm. Today's article paints a bright ans positive picture for using gastric bypass surgery as an accepted form of treatment for at least three of our nation's top five killers (cancer, heart disease, and diabetes!). They cited many impressive statistics to back up their claims/findings.

What have you heard about gastric bypass surgery? Include your knowledge of personal stories of those you know, things you have seen/heard/read in the media, etc.

Find at least one other article to support or refute today's article and include a new detail that you learned from it.

Research & report what, if any risks there are to having this surgery.

What is your overall opinion on this procedure? Carefully research & weigh the risks against the benefits before making your final assessment on this procedure.

1.) I know that gastric bypass surgey is a weight loss surgey done for medical and/or personal reasons.

2.) At http://www.obesehelp.net/, I learned how insurance companies will pay for the surgey as long as it is medically nessesary.

3.) There are a few risks some minor, such as dying on the table, which are about 0.5%, but then there are the much more common problems that always come about. Such as having calcium, protein, and many other deficiencies.

4.) My overall opinion on this preceedure, is that it is a foolish answer, if you don't want to be fat, exercise, diet, do healthier activities, if you have got to the point where it is medically necessary to have this surgery, it is your own fault for not taking care of yourself. Many people including the site I found information believe the benifits outweigh the risks, but I believe if there is a risk, then you are much better trying to solve it a healthier way.
That is why my motto is: Try standing on your own two feet.

I have heard that gastric bypass surgery helps make a person healthier if they also diet too and I have heard that it makes a person's stomach smaller. I have heard and seen surgeries of this done on television.

The article that I found that supported today's article is:

http://esciencenews.com/articles/2008/06/17/weight.loss.after.gastric.bypass.surgery.may.protect.against.infection.and.cancer

I also found by reading this article is that by having this surgery, your natural killer (immune) cells become more active and have the ability to fight infections and cancer.

Some of the risks for this surgery are: infection at the incision, leakage from the stomach into the abdominal cavity, blood clots in the lungs, iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, nausea and vomiting, ulcers, hernias, staples becoming loose, and occasionally hiccups.

My overall opinion of this procedure is that I would not do it myself. I feel that the risks out-weigh the benefit of gastric bypass surgery. So to lose weight and be healthier: exercise daily, eat healthy foods in moderation, and get out of the house and be active.

*WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY?
~I haven't heard much about gastric bypass surgery, but i do have a family friend who has had that surgery. She didn't really tell me much all she said was that her life is much happier after having the surgery. She also told me that the surgery is basically where they cut off a portion of the stomach so that it reduces your eating habits.
*FIND AT LEAST ONE OTHER ARTICLE TO SUPPORT OR REFUTE TODAY'S ARTICLE.
~Mortality Risk Score Appears Clinically Useful for Gastric Bypass Patients
by:Rabiya S. Tuma, PhD
this article refutes gastric bypass surgery
*REASEARCH AND REPORT WHAT,IF ANY RISK THERE ARE TO HAVING THIS SURGERY
~whenever someone has abdominal surgery it puts alot of stress on the body. That creates open wounds that can bleed or fail to heal. It can also create and infection. You can get blood clots, lung problems, urinary tract infection, bleeding due to heparin effect or hemorrhage and obstruction or leakage of the bowel connections, nausea, or hair loss and loss of muscle mass.
*WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL OPINION OF THIS SURGERY?
~I'm kind of stuck in the middle. i'm all for the surgery as far as getting back healthy and loosing weight but i'm also not for the surgery because it runs alot of health risk and i take my health seriously.

As of today I have not heard much about Gastric bypass except you could drastically lose weight. I don't have any personal stories, I haven't seen, heard, or read anything. I have read an article on WebMD.com that like in the article said that the doctors get your stomach and make it into a pouch to lessen the passage of food to the small intestine. I learned that people who have gastric bypass have nutritional deficiencies. I have found out that there are a lot of complications after surgery like: pouch stretching, band erosion, breakdown of staple lines, nutritional deficiencies, and leakage of stomach contents into the abdomen. My overall opinion on Gastric bypass is that if you are that fat get it. There are a lot of risks to it. Me personally I would not get I would do it the old fashioned way exercise and diet.

I have heard that Gastric Bypass surgery is really helpful for people that are extremely overweight. It is a process where the surgeons reduce the size of your stomach to at least the size of a tennis ball. Most people that i know who have had this procedure done, gained there weight back within a couple of months because they do not change there eating habits. The article that i have read refutes the procedure of the Gastric Bypass surgery because it has to many side effects which are weakness, sweating, faintness, and sometimes diarrhea. Gallstones can also begin to form in the result of the rapid weight loss. The risks of having this surgery are infections, clotting, hernias, ulcers, and sometimes death. My overall opinion of the Gastric Bypass Surgery is, unless you are desperately in need to lose weight then yea its okay. But if you can find a good healthy way to lose weight without having a risky procedure done then that, in my opinion, would be better.

I've heard that gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss method for obese people to lose weight fast. When I was in middle school, I had a teacher who had the surgery and she looked like a totally different person afterwards. I didn't know much about the surgery at that time but when I heard people talking about it I just thought of it as a "get thin quick scheme". I didn't think it was healthy and I sure didn't think it was helpful to you. The article I read on WEBMD supports the article I read in class. They both state that gastric bypass surgery reduces the chance of a life-threatening or disablind condition that is in relation to your weight. Another interesting fact that I learned from WEBMD is that when people have the surgery, they lose weight very rapidly and this continues on for up to 12 months. There are several risks that come from having the surgery. The risks are: blood clot in the lung, infection from the incision, and also leakage from the stomach into the abdominal cavity. Overall, I think that gastric bypass surgery is very beneficial to people who are obese and at risk. I think that the pros of the surgery outweigh the cons by afar as long as you do the right research and choose the best doctor to take care of the operation.

I don't know much about gastric bypass surgery. But I heard it is most commonly done on obese people.I also found out that it is basically a surgery that reroutes your stomach to your intestines.I agree with the article because I went on google and the had an article at mayoclinic.com and it said it does. I t also says that it reduces high blood pressure and high cholesterol. They said that these can help people from dying of heart disease and diabetes. some risk are blood clots in the leg. They are very dangerous they can travel to the heart and lungs. Another one is incision hernias when the hernia is weak. And dumping syndrome that's when the food moves to quickly through the stomach and into the large intestines. It causes nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, and sweating. II think gastric bypass surgery is alright if you are willing to be on a strict diet. I think that you should really look into it though if your going to get it done. You have to be very careful because it is a life changing experience.

In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, there a way in surgery to make the stomach smaller, by using staples or plastic bands. The middle portion of the stomach is connected to the smaller stomach. I t goes pass the upper part of the smaller intestine.

I agree with this article i looked up some report off of the internet and it said just about the same thing in a different text.

The risks is it can cause long term nutritional deficiencies. Osteoporosis or other bone diseases can occur.

I would never get this surgery because i do not like the risk of the surgery over the benefits.

1.) I didnt know that if you have gastric bypass surgery you were less likely to have cancer. All i knew about gastric bypass surgery was that if you are extremly over weight that it would help your health.
2.) The article that i found supports our article. It says that it can force type 2 diabetes but can reduce the risk of cancer.
3.) One of the risks of have gastric bypass is getting type 2 diabetes. There is also a risk of death with the surgery within 30 days after the surgery. You could also suffer from Blood clots in the legs, Leaking from a staple line, and also Pneumonia.
4.) I agree with the sugery if you really need it but I feel If you are 100lb. or less over weight you sould ot be aloud to have the surgery. I feel that people 150lb. and over are good candidates for gastric bypass surgery.

I've saw on television where someone has had gastric bypass surgery and used banding, as in where an inflatable silicon is placed around the stomach to make you seem full so that you wont and cant eat as much, they were really obese but now are the average size.In the banding surgery the surgeon staples your stomach across the top, sealing it off from the rest of your stomach. The resulting pouch is about the size of a walnut and can hold only about an ounce of food.In the article i read it said that even though it seems as it is a easy surgery it has significant risks and side effects and requires permanent changes in your lifestyle. You cant get the surgery and then go back to your old habits. It's important to understand what's involved and what lifestyle changes you must make. The outcome and success of the surgery is really in your hands. The risks of the surgery are DEATH, blood clots in the legs,Leaking at one of the staple lines in the stomach,Bleeding stomach ulcer,Dehydration, and etc. The benefits of it are dramatic loss weight, and may resolve high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and etc.My overall opinion on the procedure is that you shouldn't get it.To me you should just exercise from the beginning and that will solve that of you becoming obese. Unless you just come from a family of obese people which would come from genetics. So don't become obese so you wont need the surgery and it will be better chance of you living longer with less health problems.

From what I know about gastric bypass. My cousin got it and it was a success. She is very healthy and is doing very well. But Dr. Edward H. Phillips, was very skeptical a bout the finding cause cancer takes a long time to find.Sources: http://articles.latimes.com/2008/jun/19/science/sci-obesity19
Canada researches says decreases cancer 80% over five years.
there are two types of bariatric surgery. The simplest is a banding allowing the person to feel fuller and eat less, and other is gasrtic bypass, which is reduceing the stomach captivity to three or four ounces and the intestines are connected directly to the newly created pouch.
the risks are is similar to the risk of any surgery. This includes: clotting, wound infection, hernia and/or ulcers. In addition, one of the specific risks of bypass surgery is something called the dumping syndrome.Or end up surfing from malnutrition.
What I think is that it should be up to the person cause they know their body best.I don't think its good or bad it all depends on the situation. What I know my aunt had it and she is doing fine and in good health!!

Gastric Bypass is a surgical procedure that creates a very small stomach and the rest is removed. The small intestine is attached to the new stomach, allowing the lower part of the stomach to be bypassed. When the food is bypassing the other digestive organs, the food isn't absorbed to create fat. My uncle-in-law was very overweight and he had the gastric bypass, and now he is happier than ever, and runs 5 miles every day.
I read this article about how long it took for someone to finally be able to get the surgery because of the long waiting list. Most places you go for this surgery have a 5 year waiting list, but Dr. Christou thinks that is very unacceptable because if there is a surgery that helps someone lose weight and help reduce the risk of cancer, people shouldnt have to wait.
There are many risks of gastric bypass, as all other surgeries, some of which being: Death, blood clots in the legs, leaking staples, hernias, dumping syndrome, dehydration, kidney stones, gall stones, bleeding stomach ulcers, and low blood sugar.
Even with the amazing outcomes of this surgery, there are always going to be risks, that you may just have to take, but you have to decide if youre willing to take that chance.

I think this procedure is worth doing only if you are 100 pounds overweight. I would rather have this surgery and be happy with my weight than overweight and miserable.

To be honest with you, I have not heard very much about gastric bypass surgery. I did hear about it in human anatomy yesterday. What I know about it is that in this surgery, the surgeons close the stomach up and create a new passage that leads to the intestines. This, in turn, skips most of the food absorption, therefore reducing the amount of food a person absorbs, which includes fats and calories.

In the article, "Gastric Bypass Surgery" from the web site Web MD, and the article, "Gastric Bypass Surgery" from Wikipedia, both support the information in the article. One thing that they add is that there are three different variations of the surgery, but the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is the most common of the three.

There are many risks involving the surgery. Some can cause death. There is also incision hernia, leak at staple lines, dumping syndrome, dehydration, certain food intolerance, bleeding stomach ulcer, and other problems that involve materials that are absorbed that are needed for body functions,as well as blood clots forming in leg.

In my opinion, Gastric Bypass Syndrome is a good way to help a person loose weight. Even though there are quite a few risks, they have a very slim chance of happening, so the benefits outweigh the risks of Gastric Bypass Surgery. Therefore, I believe that this is a very good way to help people lose weight.

I havent heard alot about Gastric bypass surgery but I know that people who need it are obese and what it does is to sew the stomach so when you eat you can get full really fast. I found that out because I had a friend who was overweight and she was going to have Gastric bypass surgery after shed had her baby. But she had to wait a year later.
Since I am doing research about this topic I have found out that having a gastric bypass surgery leads to dangerous side affects, and it can also cause cancer. So, according to the webpage that I am reading, it does not support people into having a Gastric bypass surgery.
The risks of having a gastric bypass surgery is having an infection in the incision which is a leak from the stomach to the abdominal cavity. It also can cause dumping syndrome which is when the food you eat moves too quickly through the stomach and the intestines and it causes nausea, weakness, faintness, and sometimes diarrhea.
I really dont understand why a person no matter how obese she or he is would want to go through this dangerous and expensive surgery. There are so many people who think they are overweight and there exists so many diets that actually work and make people loose a lot of weight without undergoing the surgery. It causes so many risks and you can even get cancer....I personally prefer being obese than getting skinny and then get cancer.

Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.

I dont know of anyone that has a gastric bypass surgery but this isnt on the subject but my grandfather had 4 heart bypasses. and he survived it.

Risks common to all surgeries for weight loss include an infection in the incision, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity or where the intestine is connected, and a blood clot in the lung. About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis.

My overall opinion on the procedure is that its right for some people but not for others.

1) I have a father who found out that he was diabetic. He weighed 377 lbs. and the doctor told him that if he didn't drop to about 277 lbs. So he had to have a gastric bypass surgery.

2)I found an article at http://esciencenews.com/ that supports the article we read in class. It said that losing weight takes away the chances of contracting certain bacterias and helps prevent cancer. I found out reading an article that you can have both types of surgery and it still be just as effective as having just one of them.

3)One of the risks of gastric bypass surgery is death. It has been reported to be one death per 200 to 300 surgeries.
Another risk would be blood clots in the legs. Which occurs more in over weight people. In some cases, they travel to the lungs and lodge in the lungs' arteries causing a pulmonary embolism — a serious condition that damages lung tissue and can lead to death.
Also leaking at one of the staple lines in the stomach.

4) I feel personally that the benefits outweigh the risks therefore make the surgery worth it for you in the end.

Gastric bypass surgery. Ive heard of it a few times. I had a friend whos grandma had the surgery done. I saw pictures of her before and after the surgery and she looked like a completelty different person. I've also seen that commercial where they advertise the band that is wrapped around the stomach to reduce capacity.
I read an article that supports this one. It also says that gastric bypass surgery can reduce your risk of cancer according to researchers studies.
Some risks of getting Gastric bypass surgery done are blood clots in the legs, leaking at one of the staple lines in the stomach,
narrowing of the opening between the stomach and small intestine, incision hernia, or even DEATH.
Gastric Bypass surgery may be right for some people, but I could never get it done. I don't think i could live with a band or staples holding my stomach togethter telling me when i have to stop eating. Although there are the benifits of loosing weight and decreasing my chance of cancer, etc, there are still to many risks for me to even consider it. But i'm not obese...yet. So i won't even have to worry about the option of Gastric Bypass Surgery unless I get extremely fat.

I don't know much about gastric bypass, but i do know that it is to help you lose weight(obviously). I also know that it makes you full quicker.
My uncle has gastric bypass. I don't ever get to see him because he lives in Vermont, but the last time i has seen him was when i was little and he was pretty big. Over the summer we has a family reunion and when i saw him i honestly didn't know who he was, he has lost that much weight. Its amazing!
In the other article i read, it basically said the same things. I'm not sure what i think about gastric bypass reducing the risk of cancer. Both articles had good points about how it could and couldn't reduce the risks of cancer. I really didn't learn anything new that i didn't learn in the first article. Some side effects of gastric bypass are, some women get anemia, some people get nutritional deficiencies, you may get blood clots, some people have died from it, nausea and vomiting, dehydration, and plenty more.
Overall i think the surgery can be well worth it, depending on the person. I'm not sure about the whole cancer thing, i think its just one of those things where everyone has there own opinions. I'm not sure if i believe it or not, but its definitely something to do more research on.

Well i heard that gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach more little, causes nausea and i think that it makes your stomach get full really quickly and makes you go to the bathroom really often. I don't think somebody of my family had it but,my mom told mi of this i don't know if it's true.I haven't seen nobody whith it.

Well i went www.gogle.com and i looked for gastric bypass surgery and it does say that gastric bypass surgery make the stomach smaller and it say that with any meal eather, if it's just a little bit you will fill full and probably throw up.And something that i thought was intersthing that gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

If there are any risks you probably would not need a surgery it depends what kind of risks you have if it's associated with the graft you may not need it and if it's associated with ACL you do need it.

I think that is really important for us to know this becaues proble
we fill like this one day and we will know what is it.
